Factors Associated With Leadership: A Survey of the Literature. Journal of
Psychology 25, 1948, 35-71;
The factors which have been found to be associated with leadership could probably all be classified under the general headings of capacity, achievement, responsibility, participation, and status: 1. Capacity (intelligence, alertness, verbal facility, originality, judgment). 2. Achievement (scholarship, knowledge, athletic accomplishments). 3. Responsibility (dependability, initiative, persistence, aggressiveness, self-confidence, desire to excel). 4. Participation (activity, sociability, cooperation, adaptibility, humour). 5. Status (socioeconomic position, popularity). 6. Situation (mental level, status, skills, needs and interests of followers, objectives to be achieved, etc.).
